Deal with strangers, suffer in isolation – or feel European

European identity is by definition about feelings and emotions; meanwhile, questions starting with a “why” invite for objective, factual answers. It was perhaps for this reason that a question asked at a panel discussion I spoke at this summer [1] was so surprising despite its simplicity. Namely, the interviewer asked why one should feel European among all the other things. We already identify with our school, nation, city, fellow heavy metal fans and other communities, so why should we add Europe to the pile?
