UEF and JEF statement on the June 2007 European Council meeting in Brussels

The Union of European Federalists (UEF) and the Young European Federalists (JEF) regret that the European Council meeting in Brussels in June 2007 failed to agree a European constitution. The need for a European constitution remains undiminished – in fact it is growing all the time – and the UEF will continue to campaign for this goal.

The failure of the summit shows why diplomatic negotiations, meeting in secret and agreeing by unanimity, are the wrong way to take decisions about the future of Europe and it proves that this method will not produce the constitution that Europe needs.

Therefore UEF and JEF will continue to campaign for a European constitution, to be submitted to a European consultative referendum.
