It will be TIME on 25 May 2009. Time to raise awareness about the need of a more democratic and federal Europe, time to motivate people to use their vote, time to underline that the EU has to reform. Ten days before the elections, the Young European Federalists will hold the last pan-European action in the framework of their campaign “It’s Time for Change… It’s Time for Europe”.
JEF activists equipped with alarm clocks to make noise and flyers to inform will symbolically wake up politicians and citizens pointing at clocks and yelling: “It’s Time for Change…It’s Time to Vote for Europe!”.
In Brussels, there will be a major rally outside the European Parliament.
The action aims to raise awareness about the need for a more federal Europe and is directed at citizens as well as Members of the new European Parliament.
JEF Executive Board Member Co-ordinator of the Pan European Action Marta Semplici stated:
“Citizens complain about the lack of information and the distance between them and the European Institutions. As European federalists, we think it’s fundamental to inform and motivate people to vote asking for a more democratic and effective Europe.”
JEF Europe President Samuele Pii added:
“It’s time to tell citizens who will lead the European Union in the next 5 years. It’s time to know who will be the candidates to the Commission Presidency supported by the political parties. We would consider it an important step for democracy if a coalition between Socialists, Liberals and Greens would propose another candidate against Barroso.”
The JEF campaign “It’s Time for Change… It’s Time for Europe” centres on the JEF Manifesto underlining concrete demands and proposals which the candidates to the European Parliament are urged to support.
Samuele Pii commented:
“We ask the candidates to the European Parliament to publicly support these initiatives and to stand by them if elected in June 2009. We also ask them to indicate their preference for the Commission Presidency.”
These initiatives include establishing a single European Economic Policy, the creation of a European Energy and Environmental Agency, a proposal to introduce European Blue Helmets to contribute to global peace-keeping and the formal recognition of EU symbols in all European institutions.
Marta Semplici concluded:
“The message of the Campaign is clear. The EU must change if European citizens are ever to restore their confidence in it, and using our vote in the next European elections is the best opportunity to initiate this change”.
